Spacex Gallery is a publicly-funded contemporary art gallery. It was established in 1978 by an Exeter-based artists' co-operative, extending the SPACE philosophy of artist-led studios and exhibitions initiatives for the first time beyond London. It became a registered charity and public-funded gallery in the 1980s, and was recently designated as a "key strategic client" of the Arts Council of England; "one of 32 internationally linked contemporary art venues in the UK". The gallery is core funded by South West Arts, Exeter City Council and Devon County Council. As well as its focus on emerging artists, in recent years the gallery has presented the work of internationally renowned artists, including exhibitions by Richard Long, Bridget Riley, Gustav Metzger, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Lois Weinberger, Jayne Parker, Sigalit Landau, Hermione Wiltshire, Ocean Earth Development Corporation, Christine & Irene Hohenbuchler, Lari Pittman, Gillian Wearing, Gary Hume, Samta Benyahia, Zineb Sedira and Angus Fairhurst. Spacex has also placed an increasing emphasis upon process-based projects, including collaborative site-specific work beyond the gallery.
